On yer bike

Bike Week (18th - 26th June), is almost upon us, and as part of this year's event people are being encouraged to fix up old or broken bikes, in an attempt to get those who own a bike but rarely use it, back on two wheels. Touted as Britain's Biggest Bike Fix Up, the aim is to get groups such as schools, charities and community groups holding Bike Week events, to offer the added incentive of 'Dr Bike' consultations, providing tips and services that promote up-keep and maintenance such as properly inflated tires, checking break pads for wear, wheel truing and other repair and recommendations for care. There are three Bike Clinics taking place in Derry in the next week:

Lettershandoney Bike Clinic 20th June 2011
Tullyalley Bike Clinic 22nd June 2011
Newbuildings Bike Clinic 23rd June 2011

Email thomas.mccallion@derrycity.gov.uk for more details of these events, and in the meantime check out this handy Bike Doctor video.

As for Bike Week itself, well there's plenty going on around Northern Ireland, including the Co-Operation Ireland 2 day 220 mile return bike ride between Dublin and Belfast taking place over the last weekend of June, and the family friendly Bicycle Scavenger Hunt and BMX Stunt Rider Demonstrations in Newtonabbey on 24th June (click)

And of course you can check out the the event map for more details by visiting http://www.bikeweek.org.uk/event_search.php

On a personal note, if anyone has a second hand bike going spare give me a shout, as I'm on the look out.
